The Labour Party (LP) has firmly dismissed a purported nationwide membership registration exercise currently being circulated on social media and published by some newspapers, describing it as fake and unauthorized.
The party made this known in a press statement signed by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Prince Tony Akeni, and obtained by Truths Finder.
According to the statement, “Labour Party members nationwide and the general public are hereby informed that the information contained in the flier being circulated across social media platforms did not emanate from the appropriate and only legitimate NLC-founded Labour Party of Nigeria.”
The party explained that investigations revealed that the announcement was the handiwork of impersonators linked to the former Interim National Working Committee (iNWC) led by Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwaokocha, which it said was irreversibly dissolved and disbanded on December 3, 2025.
The Labour Party reassured its members and intending supporters across the country that a genuine and authentic membership revalidation and registration exercise would soon commence under a legitimate process that would “stand the test of time,” despite any obstruction by what it described as “criminal clones and camps.”
It further emphasized that the name “Labour Party,” including its logo, motto, emblems, registration certificate and all party symbols, are the exclusive property of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the institutional founder of the party.
The statement noted that only the NLC-founded Labour Party, with elder statesman Comrade Sylvester O.Z. Ejiofor as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Comrade Salisu Mohammed as Secretary, has the legal authority to use the party’s name and symbols.
The party warned that any individual or group outside this structure using the Labour Party’s identity in any form, within or outside Nigeria, would be violating existing Property Rights and Trademark laws, as well as the Universal Copyright Convention (UCC) of 1952, and would face punitive prosecution.
It also cautioned that organizers and participants of unauthorized events or activities using the party’s logo or symbols to impersonate the Labour Party risk disciplinary actions, including suspension, expulsion, and possible legal prosecution.
In addition, the Labour Party called on all state chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and affiliated unions nationwide to remain vigilant and report any activities of impostors to the legitimate party leadership.
The statement concluded by announcing the establishment of a Labour Party National Monitoring Team (LP-NMT), aimed at sanitizing and rebuilding the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. It added that the team’s full mandate would be made public soon and takes effect immediately.
