The Exceptional Leadership and Integrity Promotions Initiative (ELIP-Initiative) has called on Governor Umar Namadi and the Jigawa State Executive Council to direct the state Pension Scheme to immediately enrol verified retirees into the monthly pension payroll upon retirement, even while their gratuity is being processed.
In a statement personally signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Isah Mustapha, and made available to TRUTHS FINDER in Dutse, the organisation described the proposal as “a significant and commendable step toward fulfilling the state’s obligations to its public service.”
According to the group, enrolling retirees promptly would guarantee a steady income stream and shield them from unnecessary hardship.Comrade Mustapha also urged the Pension Scheme management to revive sensitization and support programmes that help prepare civil servants for life after service, particularly in financial planning and enterprise development.
The statement further applauded the Jigawa State Government for releasing of over N1.85 billion to clear all outstanding retirement and death benefits owed to over 720 beneficiaries.
“ELIP-Initiative also acknowledges the Namadi administration for providing financial bailouts on two occasions and initiating a critical review of the pension law aimed at strengthening the scheme for long-term sustainability,” Mustapha said.
He noted that these interventions demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare of retirees and families of deceased workers. However, the group expressed concern over persistent structural challenges that continue to expose beneficiaries to socio-economic difficulties.
The statement lamented that delays—sometimes lasting up to a year—between retirement and receipt of benefits had pushed many retirees into debt, trauma, and deteriorating health conditions.
While reiterating its appreciation for the government’s efforts, ELIP-Initiative said adopting the proposed reforms would position Jigawa State as a model for responsible and timely pension administration in Nigeria.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability in the state, with a focus on public finance, budget tracking, climate action, and social inclusion for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
