The Civil Society Coalition on Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution (CCSPCR) in Jigawa State has joined the rest of the world to commemorate World NGO Day 2026, with a renewed call for stronger grassroots engagement in building a peaceful, just and sustainable society.
In a statement issued to mark the 2026 World NGO Day, the Chairman of the Civil Society Coalition on Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution (CCSPCR) in the state, Comrade Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, said February 27, set aside annually as World NGO Day, is a global celebration of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), in recognition of their vital contributions to humanitarian services, democratic governance, peacebuilding and sustainable development.
According to the statement the day was officially recognised in 2014 by member states of the Baltic Sea NGO Forum and has since grown into an international platform highlighting the impact of civic action across continents.
This year’s theme, “Empowering Grassroots Action for a Sustainable Future,” underscores the importance of community-driven solutions in addressing pressing challenges such as insecurity, poverty, social injustice and climate change”.
Comrade Basirka added that “In Jigawa State, the event was powered by the Civil Society Coalition on Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution (CCSPCR), which reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, strengthening security and advancing justice across the state and the Northwest region.
He noted that the coalition celebrated the resilience, dedication and transformative impact of civil society organisations working at the community level. It noted that NGOs remain indispensable partners in advancing peace, security, justice and sustainable development across Nigeria.
The coalition emphasised that grassroots organisations play a pivotal role in strengthening civic space, promoting transparency and accountability, and ensuring inclusive participation in governance processes.
“Civil society organisations serve as the bridge between the government and the people. Their interventions in conflict resolution, humanitarian response, social empowerment and policy advocacy are essential to sustainable development,” the statement noted.
Across Nigeria, NGOs have been instrumental in supporting vulnerable populations, facilitating dialogue in conflict-prone communities, promoting women and youth inclusion, and complementing government efforts in education, healthcare and economic empowerment.
In the Northwest region particularly, where security and development challenges persist, civil society groups have intensified advocacy for peacebuilding, community resilience and citizen participation in governance.
Stakeholders at the commemoration reiterated that a sustainable future can only be achieved when communities are empowered to take ownership of development initiatives.
As the world marks World NGO Day 2026, civil society actors in Jigawa State have called for stronger partnerships between government institutions, development partners and grassroots organisations to ensure that no community is left behind.
With a unified message — Promoting Peace, Strengthening Security, Advancing Justice — the coalition reaffirmed its resolve to build inclusive communities that will stand the test of time for present and future generations.
