Tragedy struck on Tuesday afternoon in Zugai village, Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as an overhead water Tank collapsed on crowd residents fetching water, killing four women—including a pregnant woman—and injuring several others.

The Tank, which supplies water from a solar-powered borehole, reportedly gave way while dozens of villagers were gathered beneath it.

An eyewitness, Imrana Miko, told Nation that the tank suddenly crashed while residents were fetching water.

“Just now, an incident occurred at Zugai village where a solar-powered overhead tank fell on a crowd of villagers fetching water,” he said.

According to him “Three people died on the spot, while many others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.”

Another eyewitness said the supporting pillars of the tank had weakened under the weight of the fully filled tank, leading to the collapse.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Maranda Development Association, Comrade Musa Lawal, described the scene as devastating.

“Yes, it happened. Four people have been confirmed dead, all women, including a pregnant woman. As I’m talking to you, the deceased were buried according to Islamic rite,” he said.

When contacted the Chairman of Roni Local Government Council, Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni confirmed the death of four people and some sustained different degrees of injuries.

Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni said “the incident coursed by wind when people were busy patching water. The strong wing occurred and pushed the Tank and collapsed on the people. Although I’m presently at State House of Assembly on official engagement related to the 2026 budget”.

“Not with standingwere, I directed my vice and official in the council visited the village. Local government council took all medical expenses of all injured. According the report I received some patients have discharged from the hospital. It only one women remaining and she is responding to treatment”.
