The Green and Environmental Project Initiative (GEPI) has commended the Jigawa State Government for its multi-billion naira investment in flood prevention measures and called on beneficiary community-based organisations (CBOs) and residents to intensify efforts towards keeping waterways free from obstructions ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

GEPI made the call in a statement signed by its State Coordinator, Comrade Ahmed Ilallah, and made available to TRUTHS FINDER in Dutse.

The organisation praised Governor Malam Umar Namadi for what it described as proactive and sustained efforts to mitigate environmental challenges and prevent flood disasters, particularly in communities identified as vulnerable by weather and disaster management agencies.

The commendation came shortly after the governor flagged off the distribution of operational equipment to selected community-based organisations in Auyo Local Government Area.

According to Comrade Ilallah, the state’s decision to work closely with community groups responsible for clearing and maintaining waterways demonstrates an inclusive and practical approach to environmental management and disaster risk reduction.

“This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure from the recurring threat of floods. By empowering community-based organisations with the necessary tools and support, the state is strengthening grassroots participation in environmental protection and climate resilience,” he stated.

GEPI noted that the intervention comes at a critical period following warnings by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in its 2026 Annual Flood Outlook, which listed several parts of the country, including Jigawa State, among areas vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

Similarly, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) identified 17 Local Government Areas and 148 communities across Jigawa State as moderate flood-risk zones for the 2026 rainy season.

The affected local government areas include Auyo, Birniwa, Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Guri, Gwaram, Hadejia, Jahun, Kafin Hausa, Kaugama, Kirikasamma, Kiyawa, Maigatari, Malam Madori, Miga, Ringim and Taura.

The environmental group also lauded Governor Namadi for the distribution of operational equipment to 15 community-based organisations partnering with the government in maintaining and clearing waterways across the state.

GEPI further acknowledged the governor’s renewed commitment to flood control through the acquisition of additional amphibious excavators and the expansion of waterway clearance operations in flood-prone communities.

According to the governor, more than 180 kilometres of waterways have been cleared across the state, significantly improving water flow and reducing the risk of flooding.

Describing the achievements as commendable, GEPI said the measures demonstrate responsive leadership and a strong commitment to safeguarding communities against climate-related disasters.

The organisation therefore urged all beneficiary community groups to redouble their efforts by ensuring that drainage channels and waterways remain clear throughout the rainy season.

GEPI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at environmental protection, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and sustainable community development across Jigawa State.
