In a gesture marking the holy month of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has granted state pardon to 12 convicted inmates.
The development was disclosed in a statement personally signed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Bello Abdulkadir Fanini, and made available through the Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Isma’ila Ibrahim, in Dutse.
Fanini said the governor exercised his constitutional powers under Section 212(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to approve the clemency, noting that the move is aimed at promoting reconciliation and facilitating the reintegration of the beneficiaries into society.
He explained that the decision followed recommendations by the Jigawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in line with Section 5(1) of the Council’s Law, Cap A2, Laws of Jigawa State, 2012.
Those granted pardon include Ibrahim Adamu Isa, Sa’idu Umar, Adamu Musa, Habibu Musa, Yusuf Ahmed, Shu’aibu Adamu, Abdullahi Ya’u, Yahaya Jana’u, Abdul Hamisu, Garba Miko, Salisu Isa and Aliyu Ibrahim.
The Attorney-General said the gesture underscores the state government’s commitment to peace, compassion and social harmony.
He, however, urged the beneficiaries to justify the confidence reposed in them by maintaining good conduct and steering clear of actions that could bring them into conflict with the law.
“They exhibited good behaviour and had only a few months left to serve,” Fanini added.
