Former Inspector-General of Police, Sulaiman Abba, has extended cash assistance to victims of the recent windstorm that wreaked havoc on Kwaimawa community in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The intervention followed a devastating windstorm that swept through about 120 communities across the state, claiming seven lives, injuring more than 50 persons and leaving no fewer than 5,403 residents homeless after destroying hundreds of houses and other valuable property.
Speaking during a sympathy visit to the affected community, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senator candidate of Jigawa Southeast senatorial district, Alhaji Sulaiman Abba described the disaster as a painful reminder of the unpredictability of natural calamities, stressing that no material possession could equal the value of human life.
“I came here to identify with the people over this unfortunate incident. Many homes were destroyed, properties worth millions of naira were lost, and lives were cut short. While damaged property can be replaced, human life is priceless,” he said.
The former police chief noted that supporting victims of disasters had always been part of his commitment to humanitarian service, recalling his visits to flood-ravaged communities in Jahun Local Government Area and his contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is impossible for me to remain in my comfort when my people are in distress. I believe leaders and public figures should stand with their communities during difficult times,” he added.
Abba said he joined community leaders and residents in offering prayers for those who lost their lives and for divine protection against future disasters.
He urged the victims to remain patient and steadfast, noting that Islam teaches believers to endure trials with faith and hope.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the affected residents, community leaders expressed gratitude to the former Inspector-General, describing his visit and financial support as timely and compassionate.
The windstorm is among the worst natural disasters to hit Jigawa State this rainy season, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of shelter, food and other humanitarian assistance.
