Practising journalists under the aegis of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), alongside the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders, have raised over ₦40 million for the Jigawa State Command of the Nigerian Legion.
The funds were realised during the launch of the 2026 Nigerian Legion Emblem Appeal Fund, held at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Dutse.
The highest single contribution came from the 27 local government councils, which jointly donated ₦13.5 million. The Jigawa State Government also pledged ₦10 million, while Governor Malam Umar Namadi made an additional personal donation of ₦2 million on behalf of his family.
Speaking at the event, Governor Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of fallen heroes, veterans, and their families, describing their sacrifices in the service of the nation as invaluable. He noted that supporting the Nigerian Legion remained a moral and social responsibility of government and society at large.
In a strong show of solidarity, the 27 local government chairmen each contributed ₦500,000, while the Jigawa State Correspondents’ Chapel donated ₦100,000 in support of the cause.
Other contributors included the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants, and heads of security agencies, all of whom made financial commitments to support veterans, widows, and families of fallen officers.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Jigawa State Command, Alhaji Aliyu Muscular, commended Governor Namadi for his consistent humanitarian interventions, noting that the support had significantly strengthened the Legion’s capacity to cater for its members and their dependants.
He appealed for sustained government assistance, particularly in the areas of mobility, permanent office accommodation, and post-service self-reliance programmes, while pledging the Legion’s loyalty and continued support to the present administration.
The 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund launch highlighted Jigawa State’s growing commitment to honouring national service and reinforcing support systems for veterans an effort widely seen as critical to boosting morale, national unity, and social responsibility.
