The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has signalled plans to enter into an alliance with another political party ahead of the 2027 general elections, as part of efforts to reposition itself amid lingering internal challenges.
The disclosure was made by a PDP stalwart and former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, while addressing members of the party’s caucus during a special meeting held at his residence.
Lamido clarified that the party was not considering a coalition but an alliance, which he described as a strategic and pragmatic option aimed at strengthening the PDP’s electoral chances in 2027.
According to him, the current state of the party had generated anxiety among members, prompting him to embark on wide consultations with key stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the crisis confronting the PDP.
“I have met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other prominent leaders of the party. I appealed to them to put aside personal grievances and focus on the survival of the PDP and the millions of members who are worried and confused,” Lamido said.
He noted that the resolution of the party’s crisis largely depends on the disposition of four influential figures: Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“If they so wish, the PDP crisis can be resolved instantly,” he stated.
The former governor assured party members that efforts were ongoing at the national level to address internal disputes and chart a clear path forward for the party.
“At the national front, we are doing the needful to find solutions and a clear direction for all members and supporters. Very soon, the progress will be evident,” he added.
Lamido further revealed that a crucial meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, December 17, 2025, describing it as a possible final attempt to resolve lingering differences within the party, while urging members to remain patient.
Speaking on Jigawa State, Lamido said the PDP had resolved to pursue an alliance as the most realistic option to revive its electoral fortunes in the state.
“In Jigawa, we have opted for an alliance going into 2027. Given the realities on ground, this is the most viable path to victory,” he said.
He attributed the party’s internal challenges, particularly in the region, to leadership disputes and post-election disagreements, including contentious candidate selections that deepened divisions.
“Some national decisions affected the states negatively and created cracks within the party, but we are now mending fences,” Lamido explained.
He, however, stressed that the success of the planned alliance would depend largely on the support and cooperation of grassroots members.
“Our members and supporters in Jigawa must remain calm, united and prepared. They are the backbone of the PDP, and this alliance will strengthen their voice in 2027,” he said.
Lamido concluded by assuring party faithful that the ongoing engagements were deliberate efforts to reposition the PDP in Jigawa State and across the country, expressing optimism that national-level breakthroughs would soon reinforce state-level strategies.
