The Jigawa State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has passed a unanimous vote of confidence in its leadership under Chairman, Muhammad Zangina Kura, while reaffirming its commitment to unity, peace and professionalism within the union.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an extraordinary congress of the chapel, where members also endorsed the voluntary decision of the chairman to step aside and hand over the affairs of the chapel to the Vice Chairman, Mr. Abubakar Ahmadu Maishanu, pending further developments.
According to the communiqué, the congress reviewed a series of correspondences relating to the purported removal of the chairman and concluded that the action was unconstitutional, unethical and unacceptable.
The congress maintained that, as a professional body guided by the NUJ constitution, it viewed the action as a personal vendetta and witch-hunt, stressing that due process was not followed.
The statement noted that following several letters concerning the alleged leadership crisis within the chapel, an extraordinary congress was convened on June 10, 2026, to deliberate on the matter.
After exhaustive discussions, members unanimously resolved that there was no record of any formal complaint lodged by any member of the chapel against the chairman and that no evidence had been presented to substantiate the allegations contained in the correspondence.
The congress therefore condemned the purported removal in its entirety and called on all stakeholders to uphold professionalism, decorum and constitutional procedures in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Despite reaffirming confidence in the leadership of Muhammad Zangina Kura, the congress accepted his decision to temporarily step aside in the interest of peace, harmony and the continued progress of the chapel, with the vice chairman assuming leadership responsibilities.
The congress further pledged its unwavering commitment to the ethics and ideals of journalism, assuring members and the public that it would continue to safeguard the integrity of the union and work towards the advancement of the profession and the betterment of society.
Members also emphasized the need for unconditional unity among journalists in the state, describing cohesion and mutual respect as essential for the growth and stability of the chapel.
