Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai (rtd), has stressed that sustainable nation building cannot be achieved without addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, urging sustained support for the military and other security agencies.
Buratai spoke shortly after receiving an award conferred on him by the Federal University Dutse during the 2nd International Conference on Nation Building in the 21st Century, organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
“Nation building involves many components, but the most important is the people. They must be educated, their healthcare and general welfare must be prioritised, while security remains fundamental,” he said.
The former army chief observed that the prevailing security situation in the country demands collective action, calling on all stakeholders to work together to curb insecurity.
According to him, the conference is expected to stimulate national consciousness on the importance of integrating all elements necessary for development, particularly security.
“For any nation to develop, all key elements must be considered, and security is central. I believe this conference will produce far-reaching recommendations to guide government and stakeholders on the way forward,” Buratai added.
On measures to improve security, he described it as a continuous process requiring consistent government commitment.
“Security is an ongoing responsibility. Government must continue to support the military with adequate equipment, training and welfare. It is not a one-off effort,” he said.
Buratai also underscored the importance of intelligence gathering and effective policing, noting that they are critical components of a robust national security framework.
He expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration and proper implementation of policies, Nigeria can overcome its security challenges and achieve meaningful nation building.
The Ex-Chief of Army Staff commended the faculty for convening and described it as a “timely and important” conference, noting that nation building encompasses critical sectors, with the welfare and education of citizens at its core.
